Nominate Your Best Pick for Attendant of the Year!

Personal Attendant Coalition of Texas

                       PACT

Dear Advocates, Attendants, and Home and Community Attendant Services Providers:

As an important recipient and/or provider of in-home, community-based attendant services to Texans of all ages who have disabilities, you recognize the important role the attendants play in the quality of assistance they provide.  The value of the attendant’s service is far more than what they receive in compensation.  At PACT–Personal Attendant Coalition of Texas–we are working hard to advocate and recognize the value of their services in the communityPACT’s mission is to promote the respect, rights, and recognition of the person providing the attendant services; to educate all people regarding the actual value of attendant services in the community; and to support persons of all ages who have disabilities to thrive in the community, most importantly, in their own home.  All these benefits provided through quality attendant care services that last a lifetime.

PACT has been very active in promoting the value of the attendant services and the economic impact/savings of attendant care in a person’s home and community compared to the cost of institutionalized care in nursing homes or “living centers” which has a drastic, costly devaluation of a disabled person’s quality of life.

PACT is strongly and tirelessly advocating to promote attendant service value and their personal basic needs in the labor force.  Educating and testifying before the state legislature throughout the year, during the sessions, before and after the sessions. Making a livable wage in this field is difficult. Sadly, many attendants have to depend on public support to make their own ends meet.

PACT wants to continue to recognize the attendant labor force and reward exemplary attendants from across Texas with an ATTENDANT of the YEAR award celebration and barbeque being held Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 6-8pm at ADAPT of Texas, 1640A East 2nd in Austin. An application for ATTENDANT OF THE YEAR 2012 is attached.  Nomination forms are due by May 7, 2012. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the PACT organizers, Cathy Cranston or Nancy Crowther at 512-442-0252,  fax 512-442-0522, email: flacacata@aol.com.

Please join us in this free celebration of Attendant of the Year by sending an RSVP.

Candidates Flock to ADAPT Disability Forum

The disability community turned out to see what the City Council and Mayoral Candidates would say regarding our issues, and the credible candidates were all there to be heard.  All three Mayoral candidates showed up (Lee Leffingwell, Brigid Shea and Clay Dafoe) as did both candidates for Place 2 (Laura Pressley & Mike Martinez)  and for Place 6 (Sheryl Cole & Shaun Ireland).  Four of the 7 Place 5 candidates attended (John Rubine, Tina Cannon, Bill Spelman and David Conley); only Duffy, Prudente and Chavez did NOT bother to show up.  Candidates were questioned about their ideas on sidewalk funding and accessible bus stops, various rail plans, utility rate hikes, lack of accessible taxicab service, access to parks and concessions within the parks.  The most hotly contested issue was supportive housing eating up all the funding for housing at or below 30% MFI (for folks with the lowest incomes — SSI being about 12% MFI and most attendants making about 18% MFI).  Understanding of this issue varied among the candidates but the incumbents were probably among those who understood the least what many in the audience were saying.  It was ”up close and personal” and as usual, never dull.  We have campaign literature here at the office if you want to pick some up and both Mike Martinez and Tina Cannon sent in written responses to a questionnaire sent out with the invitation to the Forum, and these are available too.

EVV Meeting Big Success

ADAPT's big meeting room jam-packed with attendants, folks who use attendant services and family members.

EVV Meeting was packed! photo: Joey Tate

Seventy five attendants, people with disabilities, family members and allies gathered for the ADAPT EVV (electronic visit verification) forum Monday night.  They came together to share information and ideas regarding DADS (Department of Aging and Disability Services) move to get all community attendants to electronically verify their hours with a for-profit monitoring company. A myriad of concerns were raised regarding specifics of the plans as well as the loss of consumer control of services.  As one attendant put it, “it’s like they are trying to institutionalize you at home!”  Everyone vowed this was just the beginning.  If you want to get involved contact Cathy Cranston.  Next step?  Come to a Forum DADS suddenly decided to hold this Saturday (see events for details.)
